my son looked at that quite deeply a couple of days ago and the hair and the shoes seem to suggest that it’s Charlie and not some woman. I don’t believe that we had a time travler visit his movie set. Even if it was a cell phone there would not have been any cell towers in his time so a cell phone would not work. -- I've been blessed with a father who liked to tinker in wood, and a wife who lets me tinker in wood. Listen to the morons on Fox News: “It can’t be a transistor radio; those wouldn’t have been invented for another 20 years. It can’t be a walkie-talkie; those wouldn’t have been invented for another 10.” The implication, of course, is that it therefore must be a cell phone (never mind the fact that those wouldn’t have been invented for another 70). -- My broker promised me he would treat my money as if it were his own. Having analyzed many grainy, out of focus and otherwise hard to understand photos, I think I know what the image is showing. By the way, I AM a time traveler! After all, the Great Depression was in full swing then. ddwwb -- The best things in life aren't THINGS. |

I think it’s a spoof. A vacuum tube cell phone would be large, hot, and would need an incredible battery pack!

Does it have to have vacuum tubes just because it was years ago? I mean, after all, we are talking about time travelers. -- Making Sawdust Safely |

Regardless of what it is there is an important lession here. The best example I can think of is the leg twitch. Before we had cell phones that would vibrate in our pants pocket we had no frame of reference; it was just a twitch. But now no matter if you’re positive your phone is in another location you invariably check your pocket after one. We’ve managed to associate a body function with a piece of technology because we’re easily fooled by mimicry. This woman’s actions mimic talking into a cell phone; something that is a representative action. Take ten people dancing; none of them look alike but our brain has a representative picture of dancing so we can identify them all as dancing. Maybe one is actually having a seizure; nevermind our brain still says “dancing.” We rely on patterns to speed up recognition. The main reason why we see faces in the floor, walls and patterns where they don’t actually exist (Grilled Jesus Sandwich) is bad “software” leftover from when we had to recognize patterns quickly or risk being eaten by a big cat. Twenty years ago we wouldn’t have associated this woman’s actions with talking on a cell phone and twenty years from now people will see something different. However, right now our brains are fooled by mimicry into recognizing a pattern that doesn’t actually exist. |

Wait, she’s from far enough in the future that time travel is available, but she’s still using 2010 technology for communication? -- http://www.peteroxley.com -- http://north40studios.etsy.com -- |
