Topic tags/keywords: search wit icons

Hi Martin,
I have rounded this subject before, but since it seems to keep beeing a pain in the … for me, I thought I’ll suggest;
In the search function, I always get anoyed that I see no puctures on the blogs, projects.
Is it possible you can make a button we press, and then it makes the search with a picture view like google do, but that we satay on LJ’s projects.
I know I can make advanced search on google, but I would like to stay with you here on LJ.
Best thoughts, and as always thank you for your wonderful site,
Mads

Hey Mads, I can redirect search directly to google (results restricted to lumberjocks.com site) but it’d not be displayed in the LJ site layout so it might be a bit confusing. But in the end it should work better. I will try to do it when I find some time and we can test it.

Hi Martin,
Yes try this, all we can do is fail…
Just keep the normal version, and add a function where it can come with a picture.
It will be best if we could stay on LJ, but you can let it open in a new window, so we still are ‘home’.
Best thoughts,
Mads

There is a possibility to make it stay on Lumberjocks AND make use of the cool project cards you already have this site create. It might be a bit involved so my feelings won’t be hurt if you choose not to do it. It could go something like this.

1) Use the custom search that is exactly like what is currently in place, but maybe restrict the search to projects only (not absolutely necessary)
site:lumberjocks.com/projects

2) Use Javascript to parse all the a tags that point to lumberjocks.com/projects and replace them with themselves and an img tag img src=same project url with .jpg appended to the end in front of the link.

The end result is that project listings would look something like this

Saw blade protection DIY - by mafe @ LumberJocks.com ~ woodworking ...
Oct 24, 2010 … Saw blade protection DIY* Protecting the teeth… A little update for your saws on the road! Many saws comes with a little plastic tooth …
lumberjocks.com/projects/38819
Labeled Projects

You’ve done such a great job with the architecture of the site that it wouldn’t be too bad to implement. Getting the parsing right is the only thing that it is a bit of a pain, but once it is done, it would be pretty slick. It wouldn’t add much load to the server as all the parsing would be done on the user’s browser. The only added load would be grabbing the project image.

The benefit to all the hard work is that it would still keep users on the site and let them find the type of project they are looking for more easily and rapidly.

I think Swirt are speaking Russian!
But I agree, that if we can stay on the site it’s much better.

I use the google search function to search Lumberjocks all the time. Go to the advance search page and put lumberjocks.com in the “search within a site or domain” blank. Then put in your key words both items that should be included and words that should be excluded. You can search all the text that’s been indexed by google’s web collecting spider. Plus you can search for a specific file type, like .jpg, .doc, .xls, .pdf, .dwg and anything else you want to find. Sometimes you find documents that were never meant to be public. I once went to a magazine site and searched for filetype:pdf and found every issue they had ever printed. You’ll see the query string for your advanced search at the top of the page and next time, you can use the command line on google’s regular page without going to the advanced page. Also search results can be queried from google and the results displayed in a website using java code. As good as this webmaster is with java, I’m sure an advance search function is on the way. But, till it’s ready, just use google’s search function to find everything you are looking for.

Or … go to Google ….

Type the THING you’re looking for (example: bookshelf).

The type “site:lumberjocks.com”

So ….. bookshelf site:lumberjocks.com

Then hit ‘enter,’ on your keyboard.

When the results come up, you’ll see … in the upper left-hand corner … the word “images.”

If you click on “images,” the results will all be pictures FROM the LumberJocks site.

If you click ON one of the images that come up, the picture will come up. ALSO … you will see a new link that says “Website for this image.”

If you click on “Website for this image,” it will take you right TO that LumberJocks page, where that image lives.

It SOUNDS like a lot of work, but it only takes me a few seconds.

Try it. You might like it :-)

Glad it worked for you, Autumn.

Maybe some of us will use this in addition TO our time on this site—not instead of it.

You see ? I’m just as generous in spending other people’s time as most of us are in spending other peoples’ money :-)

I’m curious about your point, though. I’m always reluctant to ask Martin—especially publicly—about the business side of this website, but … it isn’t a certainty that additional clicks … on additional threads …. once you’re IN the site … will directly result in additional revenue TO the site.

The other thing is …. even if it did result in a slight decrease in page views, as advertisers see them … that might be okay with Martin, if it:

a) Is temporary, and

b) gives US a better overall user experience, and

c) takes the pressure off of him to get all these doggone smart features coded LOL !

Yes, I like new google image search.. unfortunately their custom search for websites is still old fashioned. Anyways here’s my first comment in this thread again:
