The title says it all really, see…

I haven’t been through every project, so there may be others.

Yes, I’ve tried multiple browsers – the HTML code is showing (for the project grid page)...
src=”/images/.png” rather than a “proper” link to a picture from assets.

Any ideas what’s gone on, and when it might be fixed?

Bunch of threads about it.
- Rick M

Well, I do see one thread about this (there maybe more on other pages).
Of the pictures I’ve looked into, the actual “big” picture doesn’t still exist, it’s the thumbnail that’s broken. Of course, a thumbnail can easily be rebuilt.

Among the “bunch” is there one you can point me to that has a reply from the powers that be?

Another “site feedback” post with no response – is everyone on holiday?
If so, I hope they are having a great time.

The server ate a bunch of our pictures and only thumbnails remain. Sucks, nothing to be done but re upload the missing pictures. There was another issue that was fixed by clicking edit and resaving but I’ve forgotten what it was. There are a bunch of threads discussing it but you have to go back a ways because it’s an old issue.

I don’t know if that’s “official answer”, or just a theory, but to be sure it doesn’t cover all instances of missing pictures.

Example…
This project – see missing picture top right of the grid – well here it is.
still up on the LJ server,

Ditto this project – see picture missing bottom left – again – here it is…

So, at least for those 2 examples, and probably many more, all the required information is still on the LJ server – it’s the thumbnail that’s gone rather than the main picture, but the thumbnail could easily be rebuilt.

Do they not know that? Do they not know how to do that? Is there just no will to do it?
That’s what confuses me.

It can be a variety of reasons why it happens. The most recent reason was resolved, but with the older projects, the user would need to reupload the image.
