Hi. I am new here. I wanted to upload more pictures, but it seems to only allow one. Anyway, here is my African Mahogany stair base. I did the base and casement for an entire house. It has been nailed on except for around the mirrors which is glued. After everything was in place I did a Miniwax stain coat and then Polyurethened it. Remember when applying stain wipe. The goal is not to use too much stain. Wiping will lead to a more consistent coat. After the first coat of Poly you need to steel wool. If you don't it won't be smooth. It's ok if it looks like the Poly is coming off. It will go back on the second coat. Remember to always use the best blades. This leads to less sanding before stain.

steps:

1. good blade, good cuts. Lay out as you go along. Write down measurements for cuts
2. clean up. Wood debris can be out of hand
3. good nail gun, good compressor. Sink nails
4. sand with 220 and maybe 320
5. vacuum or towel wipe before stain
6. stain with cloth if not a laquer spray guy
7. poly one coat
8. steel wool after first poly coat and make sure clean without debris
9. 2nd poly coat and it will shine

USE proper face protection when staining and polying. The fumes are a real killer!
