Okay, so I’m sitting here with the Mrs. (who has become addicted to GardenTenders) and we’re contently sharing our experiences on our respective sites when she says to me, “So why did Martin start LumberJocks?”

Now, I’ve only been here about six months so I don’t know a lot of the background. I wandered over to Martin’s profile and there’s not a lot of explicit history there. I could play dime-store anthropologists and read all the early entries from some of the first folks here, but I’m not that ambitious.

So, I’m asking for a bit of history. How and why did LJ start? This is a great place and if I want to start an oral tradition to pass on to my grandchildren, I’ll need a few more stories.

How ‘bout a history lesson.

well, here’s what I’m aware of:
Martin, who works as computer guy (hah.. I think that’s a professional title), creating websites etc…. wanted to practice with a new type of coding system. So, he created LumberJocks to try it out.

And now you know.

I agree rikkor, I can’t thank Martin enough. I was kinda hoping that there was a “Vision” involved, a “Mission” to accomplish, a “Quest”. Something real exciting. I can accept the idea of an experiment that turned out really good. It just doesn’t keep the kids interest. ;-)

Consider this, a man wants to learn a new technology and sees woodworkers as an interesting audience so he creates a top notch website that draws thousands of woodworkers from around the globe. It just doesn’t say “Movie Rights” to me.

Well Deb at the rate he’s going and the quality of his work, I would not be surprised to see him go a long, long way.

LumberJocks: The Movie
One man … one dream … to unite woodworkers everywhere. They said it couldn’t be done. But against all odds, one man rose to the challenge … and others heard the call. Enduring countless hardships, one man paved the way … and others followed his lead. One man dared to dream … and turned that dream into reality for thousands of others. One man: Martin Sojka. His dream: LumberJocks.

Well, I’ll add my two cents worth. I only found out about Lumberjocks a few days ago, but I realize what an incredible job Martin has done because I have tried to do similar things myself and I have gotten no where.

I have started several websites, all with great wonderful intentions, and they have gotten nowhere. Not sure what Martin has that I don’t but my guess is chutzpah (and I have no idea how to spell that). Rather than filling up this message with talk about my projects, I will just say that this site is EXCELLENT. The forums are active and very friendly and the look and feel are incredible!

I have no doubt in my mind that someone will want to come along and buy these sites from Martin in a very short time. All of his creativity and hard work will pay off. There is a REASON he has that big ol smile on his face in his photo.
