Google Street View cars broke laws, says Canadian privacy commissioner
October 20th 2010, Sympatico.ca Autos

Google’s camera-carrying Street View cars broke Canadian privacy laws when they carelessly collected personal information while driving down the street, says the federal privacy commissioner.

The Street View cars, which are supposed to only take pictures, have been collecting e-mail addresses, passwords, names, health details and phone numbers, according to a story by the CBC. The cars apparently got the information from unencrypted household Wi-Fi networks. How they could do so unintentionally remains unclear.

“This incident was a serious violation of Canadians’ privacy rights,” privacy commissioner, Jennifer Stoddart, told the CBC.

She has given Google until Feb. 1 to delete the data. If that happens, there would be no further consequences.

GMan,
I know it’s not done where I live. The closest Google street view is 38 miles from my home.

After my neighbor bragged about how he had some software that can crack any wifi encryption within a few minutes (I can neither confirm nor deny that this is possible, I’m not that good with computers), I went to the orange borg and bought jacks and wire and plugs and sockets and other implements of ethernet and wired my house. I catch him in my attic splicing wires and it’ll be curtains for him. The wires are a little annoying, but that’s just a small sacrifice to ensure that people keep their long pointy blue noses outta my bidniss.

Gee I left the keys in the car with the motor running, and some wise guy stole it. Come on kids, we’re not in Kansas anymore… There really are snoopers out there and none of the rest are as nice as Google.

I don’t know, GMman, I live so far in the woods they nearly have to pump daylight to me….
My little town is not worth snooping on (763)...they prefer the big cities where the action is….
The biggest town close to me is 45 miles away…why come way in the sticks…..

That’s right Greg, I live like a hermit….I don’t hang around big cities….I lived in Memphis, TN, for 20 years.. I hated every minute of it….Right….noone wants a pixs of an old man who has false teeth, wears glasses, a toopee, and walks with a cane, and limps really bad, who walks funny cause of hemmorids, and has a bad back.. So you see that’s why noone wants my pixs….they like the kind that looks like the “hottie” on your Vette..

I gotta go you guys, I am real tired. Oh and I’m telling Martin on both of you because I don’t think your even woodworkers. You guys will be banned and I will dance a jig on your empty homepages and crack bears with Neil. Maybe open a few beers to.

On Oct 18th I was just sitting down in my garage with a new Lee Valley catalog when the street view car drove past. I live at the top of a T in the road and when I noticed him drive by I pulled my Jeep into the garage and closed the door. Then he drove down from the other side. The Jeep now in the garage and the door closed, but I was now sitting and waving from a park bench across the street. I hope to be immortalized forever, or at least till they drive by again in a few years.

LOL Don. Ok, so these vehicles work from Google capturing views for their maps?
