Doing knotty alder staining on all interior doors and cabinets in new house. I have seen a lot of pictures online that show very blotchy. Trying to avoid that. Any staining tips?

You can get that look various ways, but to me, it’s hiding the beauty of the wood. I build interior doors out of knotty alder and our finish involves pre-stain conditioner, gel stain, and satin wipe-on poly. However, that gives you the look you see here, and not what you’re looking for.

Edit: I forgot to mention that, whatever else, go get some knotty alder and do lots of test pieces to get the color and finish you want. We often go through a dozen sample pieces or more before landing on something we like.

-- No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.
