Topic tags/keywords: question plane

I am making an infill plane, based off of a Norris no 4 plane. Mine is pinned together rather than dovetailed, and thus the sole is 1/2 inches thick. the plane I am making is around 7 inches, I am bedding the iron at 50 degrees. What I am curious about is the blade thickness and the width (or rather how open) the mouth is. Does anyone have a Norris no 4 and are willing to give me measurements?

I can’t answer your question directly because I don’t have a norris, but in general, when you build a smoother, the tightness of the mouth is in relationship to how fine you want your shavings to be. When I build a plane, I start with it a little to tight, because it’s easy enough to open it up. It’s a bit problematic closing it though.

that seems what I am going to do. I am aiming for a 6.3 mm mouth as a starter, meaning that when the blade is level with the sole, the mouth will be about .008 in. opening.

Thanks!
right now my design has a hair widths mouth opening that will be filed open so I can get it just right.
