Topic tags/keywords: gluing padauk question

I am making a heart-shaped box out of PADAUK, which has lots of oils in it naturally. One book I have says that hide glues or yellow glues will not work very well when gluing it up. What glue is best? Maybe gorilla glue? Can I wipe it with acetone first to dispel the surface oils, first, then use Titebond III?

Thanks for the info,
God Bless,
Hawg

I did not know that there is a gluing problem with PADAUK. I am looking forward to a response to your question. I have a lot of PADAUK that I am going use for a secretary desk.

Wipe down the cut surface with acetone and then immediately glue it up with Titebond II or Titebond III either will work—just make sure you get it clamped up good. I built several pieces out of Padauk using this process with no joint failures.

The acetone is a great idea,if yu have access to West Systems Epoxy there should be no problems at all.

HI Hawg don’t be afraid of the West Systems epoxy it’s a whole different type than most,it’s what virutually all wooden boat builders use.About I don’t know how ago I hired a young guy who came from a boat background if you call 8 million dollar yahts a boat, anyway it was his suggestion and it is simply wonderful. It is pretty expensive though. It is also very good for bent laminations, not a lot of springback, good gap filling and very good bonding properties.
