Topic tags/keywords: plane rider

I bought this plane at a local woodworking store. The plating on the cap seems cheap, and the iron was proud along it’s back. It has the dimensions of a No. 6. I lapped the sole and sharpened it the best I could. It seems to work on soft wood well.

Who is this manufacturer? I scoured the net and only found the axeminster line which is pricey.

I was thinking of returning it and looking on eBay for something older but with more longevity.

Don’t know about the plane but it looks like it’ll be a good user, and

Thanks, glad to be here! I’ve learned a lot by simply lurking the forums.

I’ve used this a little bit after tuning it up, and it’s worked well. I need to work on technique though.

Just wish I knew more about the plane itself. It’s kind of a mystery!

It kinda looks like the Axminster line but theirs appear to have brass lever caps and branding on the cheeks. Maybe older model? Regardless, looks like a good user which is what matters. Is that the box it came in? That’s an awfully big “smoothing plane”!

Yes, that’s the box it came in. I thought it was odd they called it a smoothing plane! I’ll try to upload some more pics in a bit, but here’s another one of the box:

Here’s a pic of the only branding the plane has on one side:

Sorry about the sideways pics; I’ve tried taking them in landscape format with my phone like a tutorial here said but no love.

What kind of phone are you using. With iOS you can rotate the picture before uploading.

I’m using a Samsung S7. I’ve tried rotating and cropping the pics with the OS editing tools, as well as holding the phone in landscape mode when taking the pics. I’ll experiment more before adding more pictures.

Look at this site – IndiaMart

Search on the page or scroll down to 260062. Looks like your plane. Rs 2090 (rupees). That’s about $32. Looks like a great deal at that price.

The cap seems pretty cheap but solid:

Outside of figuring out where this was made and by whom, I also want to know if it seems like something I should keep and get use out of, or if it’s too cheap for the long run. Then maybe I’d try finding an older one on eBay that’s older, but a tank. I put a weekend into lapping it and flattening the back of the iron which was significantly proud. I still need to work on the chip breaker edge.

Another concern for me is the iron itself, which is bent:

I’m able to get it to plane wood, but it’s quality concerns me. The store owner said I could return it, but if you all think it’s fine, I’ll keep it.

That is a match for the number on the box. Unfortunately, I bought it for $89.97! Not such a great deal. I think I’ll return it

Don’t compare wholesale prices with shipping from India with retail prices. I don’t think you paid too much if it is a good plane.
