Topic tags/keywords: wood movement

Hey guys. I am new to the forum and fairly new to woodworking. I have been active for about a year and a half self taught and a little bit of apprenticeship at a cabinet shop.

My question is about wood movement in a project I am working on. I am building for a friend an American flag from cherry and maple for the stripes. The union is in a walnut frame as a display case for coins with a glass front. The issue I am trying to resolve is that I want a walnut frame case around the entire flag. How do I do this and account for wood movement in the cherry and maple stripes? Is this something I really need to worry that much about for a display case that will hang on the wall?

Glue? Brad nails? Or maybe like a bread board.

The frame I was planning on is going to be 3 inches wide at about 1/2 inch thick mitred.

If I’m understanding your project correctly, why not make the “flag” area (or field) fit into the frame just as you would build a door? The frame area would be just a bit larger than the field. The field would fit into the frame via a dado or a rebate. This would allow for potential movement by the field.

Thanks Bill, I have thought about that by my issue is that first off the display case in the union area is 2 inches think vs the field or stripes are 3/4. Hence the main need for a frame that is 3 inches thick.
