Does anyone have any experience adjusting the tension on the belt for a Jepson Model B6609 6”x48” Belt/Disc Sander? I don’t understand the adjustment methodology and can’t keep the belt from pulling to one side or the other. There appears to be 2 adjustment rollers and 2 lock down bolts (one of each on either side). I’ve attached pictures and you can see the belt is already fraying from trying to adjust it. I can’t find any manuals online for help. Has anyone been down this road? Thanks

I don’t have that model but I can explain the adjustment from your pictures.

Loosen the silver locking bolt a couple of turns.
Very very carefully turn the black bolt in the clockwise direction, only on the side that the belt is tracking toward.
Turn it on and check that you’ve made enough adjustment for the belt to track straight.
Make more adjustments on the black bolt as necessary. The smaller the adjustment the better.
Tighten the silver locking bolt.

A tip, it’s easier to make small adjustment with a longer wrench.

Thanks for the tutorial. It’s been a bitch getting this thing to run true. Trying to make adjustments with the motor at full rpm is tough if the belt isn’t right. Doesn’t take much to mess it up. A question for you… should the belt be pretty tight to start with for adjusting, or not tightened all the way out? I’ve heard a loose belt can be worse than an over tightened belt. Your thoughts?

The belt needs tension on it from the start. I just snug up the tension screws until the belt is tight enough to roll by hand without slippage. I then bump on and off the power to see where the belt is going to track. I then make a slight tightening adjustment to the one side where the belt is riding off too. And when I see the belt is not going to track too far off I then let it fly and start tweaking the adjustment screws backwards and forwards until it’s centered.

Thanks for the technique. I just fitted a new belt on and it went pretty smoothly. Except when I turned the adjustment knob the wrong way. Much less fraying.

If you still cannot get it to track, you can try using a narrower belt if you can find one that length, at least until you figure out how to tweak it into alignment. Some sanders are notorious for not tracking well so it may just be easier to use a narrower belt.

Thanks for the idea. I’m starting to get the hang of the adjustment process. I better understand how the tension rollers work separate from the lock down bolts. I’ve found that if I adjust the belt in the vertical position, I can see the adjustment rollers and adjust the belt in the proper direction, rather than guessing wrong on which way to turn the wrench from the top side in the horizontal position.
