Topic tags/keywords: i bought this old desk and i havent finish sanding it yet i want to stain it and give it to my son i think its redwood and i read that softwood can get blotchy when stained so should i use a wood conditioner pre-stain before or can i use just the general finish java gel on top of the raw wood its my 2nd time ever refinishing wood

Looks like a mahogany veneer. Go for it.

Thank you! When I was sanding it a very orange dust was coming out that’s why I thought it was redwood

Can I use Gel Stain? Do I need a pre Stain conditioner?

Orangey dust might have been a shellac finish. I think you could just go ahead and stain but YOU decide if you want to go the extra step. Looks like a decent piece so might be worth it for peace of mind.
