Until recently I thought that a butterfly leaf dining table would be perfect for our house. Then someone posted a draw leaf/Dutch pullout over here, and now I’m torn between the two. Anyhow, I’m not sure where I found this one, but I love the design. I’m confused about the tabletop though. I’ve seen bow ties used in plenty of projects. I even have a couple of threads saved where members talk more indepth about them. The problem is, the ones I’ve seen have been used for stopping splits in the wood from traveling. This table top seems to be using them to hold the table top together, and also allowing for movement. They’re all evenly spaced, and are spread out over the entire top. Would that be a feasible way of doing things, or would something like this be more of a decorative thing, and the person would still glue the boards long grain to long grain?

Thank you.

I like the design also. I’d be 99% sure those particular butterfly’s are decorative only. They are not needed for a glue up like that and not every board in the top has them.

Derrick, I am going to guess that these butterflies are only decorative veneer. Otherwise, they would attempt restrict the movement of the top. Glue the boards for the top together as normal. FWIW

Decorative only

Well, I guess I was completely fooled by decoration. Thank you for the help!
