Hey. New to the forum. Always loved carving at small pieces of wood I find and found this a while back when this tree was hit by some thunder.

No way of going back to look at this tree sadly, so need some help.. Thanks in advance. L.W.

Looks like the sapwood of some curly Oregon black walnut. More pics wouldn’t hurt

Thanks for the reply. Here are some more images. I did google your suggestion and don’t think that’s it as the insides aren’t black?’

First image in original post – the black speck was a piece of inside of the bark I have left.

Could be hickory. You can tell by smell if it is.

Wow! That’s some powerful thunder. Usually takes lightning to knock down a tree. The thunder is just noise, though I guess a sonic boom can cause damage.

This piece of wood I picked up in travels in East Asia. Should have figured location would play a part. aha..

Any books for something like this?
