I have a listing near me (1hr 1-way) for a Shopsmith Bandsaw – Model 505641 for $125. The owner claims that everything works but he does not know what is “resaw” when I asked about re-saw capacity.

Looking for some inputs from LJ community -

1. Is this a good buy?
2. What / how should I check if anything is broken or not working properly.

It has a 6” resaw capacity, now is it a motorized free standing one or a SS specialty power tool? The free standing one comes on a stand and has its own motor. Good price for that as long as it runs well.
If it is one that mounts on a SS and runs off of that motor, without having the SS it is useless, but if he is selling it with a SS, all for 125, if it runs is a steal.

If you have a SS and he is just selling it separate, and it looks like it is mounted on a SS, it is a good price. They dont sell the free standing one with its own motor and stand any more.

mrbob, Thanks for your input. I have asked the seller for some more photos. This was the only photo posted in the listing.

The SS bandsaw is an excellent machine and $125 is a good price. The catch is that it is a SS “special purpose tool” and is meant to run as an accessory to the ShopSmith. (If it is the one in the picture)
That said the free standing version is exactly the same saw and you could certainly design a setup for this one to accept a belt drive.

These are really pretty decent bandsaws. There is a enlightening write up on them here:

I had one with my SS setup but needed the room so just recently sold the whole saw and all bandsaw. You will find a huge following on the Shopsmith forum and if I had the room I would have kept mine. That is a good price.

All you need to know here if you buy it.
It is just a matter if the main SS comes with it for that price? Other wisw you will need to build a stand and buy a 1/2-3/4 HP motor.
You need to get more info from the seller.

Seems like a pretty small and light duty bandsaw for resawing.

I concur with Shipwright. The SS bandsaw is an excellent machine.

Depends what you are resawing …... this is 6” Purpleheart into 1/16” veneer
