I’ve relatively new here, and have mainly learned my way by experimenting (i.e., poke-and-hope). One thing that has frustrated me is using the search engine. As far as I can tell when I search for something, the search engine searches all of LJ. That is often not what I want. For example, I am looking on info on staining turned projects for outside use. No matter how I frame my search, I end up with many, many hits most of which are irrelevant because they aren’t about turning. If I could limit the search to on the turning forum it would help a lot.

An alternative approach would be to use basic Boolean operators in a search string. That doesn’t seem to work either.

Am I missing something here at LJ (hope, hope)? If not, any other suggestions?

I find the same issue. One thing that helps me to get around that is to use a Google search like so:

stain site:http://lumberjocks.com/forums/14 < this only turned up 3 results, so perhaps searching that forum is giong to produce limited reslts.

MerylL: I hadn’t seen your response. This is GREAT. I really appreciate this!! makes for much more targeted searching. It works on other sites I use that have lousy search engines.

try something like this in the google search bar:

site:lumberjocks.com “stain” “exterior” “turning”

the quotes indicate those words must be present
in each result.

Another useful site for technical woodworking information
is Woodweb.com. It’s geared to professionals.

Have your say...
