Topic tags/keywords: half-back hand saw wenzloff

I’ve been eyeing this Wenzloff Half Back Saw and curious if anyone here has used one and their opinion on it compared to a more traditional panel saw?

Anyone use this saw?

A buddy of mine, docholiday, mentioned the Wenloff saw company on this thread that I started about selecting a dovetail saw. He spoke very highly of the Wensloff and Sons saw company. I have come to value Doc’s opinion on hand tools. I just thought that you might like to see what he had to say on the thread. He also had additional things to say on Wezloff in a PM which of course is private. Doc will often comment on a thread like this so it wouldn’t surprise me if he comments on this one. Also, Veritas speaks highly of Wenzloff saws. I don’t know anything about this particular model.

Sorry I’ve got no experience with it. This page has a little historical info on the Disston 8 half-back that it is patterned after. (scroll down a bit)

There is no comparison , the Wenzloff saws are finely crafted and a pleasure to cut with . If you bought it and were unhappy with the performance of the saw I’m sure LV would refund your money . You could also resell it in any of the woodworking forums for what you paid for it .

Mike and the gang over at Wenzloff usually have a back log of work , the nice thing about the LV saws is you won’t have to wait for it .

Thanks for the links guys.

Actually JerryS, I was wanting to compare a Wenzloff to a Wenzloff. I haven’t purchased one yet, but was curious as to the differences between the Half-Back and the more traditional (no-back) panel saws that Wenzloff offers (through LV).

I’ll be ordering their Large Tenon saw shortly, and researching for my next purchase.

First of all, thanks for the kind words helluvawreck. I really appreciate it. I do think that Wenzloff makes an excellent product. I’ve also found them to be helpful and forthcoming with information if needed. I’m actually in the process of attempting to make my own half-back saw. I am making my own, just to see if I can do it. I have an old saw plate with some good steel from an old Disston saw. I have a spine from an old back saw that the saw plate was too badly rusted and pitted to be of any use. I will make my own handle although I have not yet chosen a wood or handle pattern that I plan to use just yet. When it is completed, I will post on the project (that of course is assuming this experiment to actually be successful).
