I have some walnut. A 1/4 log about 6’ long and maybe 6” on one face. I know it is dry, it has been in my shop for years. Depending on how you cut it there is probably enough for a nice box and trim. There is also some oak in a tree I cut down that had died several years ago. I will have to cut a chumk out of it, but as I recall the base of the tree looked spalted. There is some beech that is readily available. Let me know your size requirements and I can cut something for you.

My question is: how big is your bandsaw as far as resaw capacity? I’ve got a block or two of old-growth redwood (maybe even very mildly burly/curly) that I haven’t used in the few years I’ve had the wood. I may have taken a few handplane passes on them in order to see the grain, but they’re larger than 4×4. I’m not near the shop now, so I’d have to find them and measure the exact size, but I’d venture a guess on one piece as being around 8 or 9×10 x 7. It won’t fit in a typical 14” bandsaw with 6” resaw unless you have a riser. If you’re interested, let me know your bandsaw’s resaw height, and I can cut it down on my big ol’ 20” saw to fit whatever you’ve got. Send me a message if this sounds like a route you want to take, and we can talk price and other details. I used to sell veneer, so I do ship.

I’ve also got some other species (mostly exotics) that are probably big enough for a 4×4 bandsaw box, so I’ll take a look and let you know what I’ve got that I can stand to part with.

The redwood block is 11”W x 12”L x 7”TH and has some wane on one edge. One could probably get a solid block from this piece around 8×12 x 7. I also have a piece of 4×4x8 Narra (same tree as amboyna) that I also haven’t used yet. Let me know if you’re interested.

David,
If you’re referring to the BandSaw box in Steve’s projects, it’s made using a glue-up not from a single solid block.
If you like that and want to do that, I’ll gladly send you a box of wood you can glue up and make a nice box from merely for the actual cost of mailing! I’ve got too much wood offcuts in the shop taking up valuable space.
Cheers,
Gary

David,
I sent several replies but have not heard back from you yet.
Please check your messages and let me know what you prefer.

I’ve never worked so hard to give away lumber for the cost of shipping :-)

Cheers,
Gary
