I just purchased this well used lathe but didn't realize that it was missing the drive center. That's the piece with a female 3/4" x 10 tpi fitting that screws on the output shaft and actually drives the wood. Before I spend a lot of time and money trying to jury rig a new drive piece, perhaps someone may know where this piece might be available. Harbor Freight doesn't carry any parts for this model (surprise). Thanks for any advice!

Hi,
I had the same problem. I found what I need at Pennstate Industries. I needed to have a 1"-8 so I can put a pen mandrel on it. You need to buy this adapter (LA341018) which is 3/4-10 female to 1-8 male. They also have other adapters. you may call them and they are very helpful. Ask for JERRY in Tech support. He knows all this. Here is a link to their web site: https://www.pennstateind.com/store/spindle-adapters.html
Good Luck
Sam
It's a shame that lathe doesn't have a spindle with a taper… so you are left with only stuff you can screw on that 3/4"-10tpi spindle nose. I imagine that if HF no longer sources the drive center, then you are pretty much stuck trying to find one at places like ebay.
The cheapest and easiest way to get going would be to get a thread tap like Waho shows above. If you already have a tap/die set, you might already have the tap (3/4"-10tpi). You could use it to make a drive center as well as all sorts of other stuff (faceplates and direct threading glue blocks, screw chucks, jam chucks, mandrels, etc…) out of scrap 2×4's:

Thanks for all the information, fellows, but Penn State can't offer any real assistance. As it looks right now, if nothing turn up on eBay (nothing so far) pretty soon, I'll have to get something custom made to handle a tapered drive center.
