routing out letters

My church has ask me to make a sing.
It is not much they want but I do need to rout out some 4” letters
How would you go about this templates or free hand. I need the best way to do a good job safely.

-- Do it right the first time. Becuase fixing it is a wast of time.

Templates would be a lot more consistant, but if you want the freehand look you can do that also.

If you do it freehand you want to make sure that the wood you select doesn’t have a real strong a
grain as this might defelect the bit some. Go slow and take your time. Sketch out what you want
it to say on the wood before you start. And last but not least, the narrower the bit the easier it will be.

craftsman has a great sign making kit,I just got one over the weekend, It has two letter sizes 1 1/2 and 2 1/2, hope this might work for you
