I have noticed Baileigh is advertising on TV. How many LJ's own Baileigh power tools and what is your opinion of them? I have their catalog and they appear to be industrial quality. They also appear to be more expensive.

We have been buying Baileigh machines for our school shop. Theses machines are very nice and hold up well even with many different students working with them.

Several have them here based on the threads the past few years. One or two of the threads went south the way I remember and eventually Baileigh moved on from the site. Several participated in their contests while they were active on the site.

I think most thought they were soundly built but very, very similar to other saws. They were new to woodworking market so no real history in regards to quality/use. They usually pointed out their metal working history and reputation to validate the woodworking tools. I think the consensus was you were buying a Grizzly for several hundred or more dollars (may or may not been accurate).

I have a Baileigh JP-1686 on order currently. The JP-1686 appears to be a knockoff of the Felder AD741 unit, at less than half the price. Some of their tools do compare to Grizzly though, and end up costing a bit more than the equivalent Grizzly tool.

From what I can glean, they appear to on par with other good imports. Not so different from Jet, upper Grizzly, General International, Shop Fox, Laguna, etc. I believe the Laguna Fusion and Baileigh hybrids are about identical. At one time, the Grizzly G0690 and one of the Baileigh cabinet saws were about identical, but Baileigh changed their lift mechanism from a swing arm to a vertical lift, so they're no longer the same saw. There are a limited number of factories that actually manufacture these machines. Obviously the color and stuff that gets bolted to the main assembly can vary, but the basic designs are often very similar from one brand to the next.

It was my belief that a company that made pretty expensive tools for industry had to do quality work. They appear to be more world wide represented than say, Jet or General. I have a 30 year old Jet cabinet saw; damn good saw.
