Lately I’ve noticed a surge in spam accounts on this site and its becoming very annoying. It is also not efficient to PM Martin with names of spammers because I’m sure he gets many duplicate PM’s (SPAM) from all users who want to report the same account name.

Martin, it would be greatly appreciated if you could please add a Report Spammer button to LJ? I see it operating in two ways but these are just my opinion.

1) Create a new datatable/xml file/etc to store spam account records. When the Report Spammer button is clicked, it would check those records to see if that account already exists as reported. If it doesn’t exist, it would add it to this table and send Martin/Admins an email/PM. If it does already exist though, nothing would happen since it means Martin/Admins already got a message and we would just wait on you to manually remove the record.

2) Create a new datatable/xml file/etc to store spam account records. When the Report Spammer button is clicked, it would check if the account already exists. IF 2-3 unique LJ accounts click to report the spam account, then the account would automatically be removed .

...or my favorite, option 3
3) Take all spammers out back like Old Yeller

Wow … I can see some real potential for abuse here. Is this really that big of a problem?

Abuse how? Are you thinking people would report normal users as spammers if we don’t like them?

Thats why I say if done automatically it would require multiple users to all report that account, not just a single person. Although manually would prevent abuse altogether.

Besides spam being annoying, I see this as a better approach to dealing with them instead of the current way where I’m guessing multiple LJ users are all sending martin a PM reporting the same spam account.

EDIT: And yes, I have seen the number of spam accounts on here go up recently. Although Martin has done a great job of promptly removing them.

Most every forum that I’ve ever frequented has two features … both of which I think would be great, here:

1) Report abuse button, as you say. It sends the threat to the moderators for review and—if appropriate—deletion. It depends on the rules of the site being made very clear;

2) An “ignore user” button. This is VERY different from the block button that Martin DID implement. It simply means that … you never see anything posted by a person whose posts you’ve chosen to ignore. They don’t know it. No fanfare is made, around it. You … simply don’t see their posts, anymore.

Honestly, some of this implies that we have moderators—very controversial, I’m sure. But—at least on the woodworking sites that I know if, where there ARE no moderators … a Good Ole Boys club results—a very EXclusive, as opposed to INclusive bunch.

I think that’s a negative.

Look, the forum is now the size of a small city. All KINDS of stuff is going to happen. It would be better if we had the tools to help “police” the town, a little bit. In the end, nobody loses—because …. it’s still Martin’s site, and he would still make the rules, and set the tone.

I’ve run a few forums on other topics and a spam report system is a big help. In addition to the suggestions you made Eric I’ve found it helpful to have some “trusted users” that when they use the spam report, the post is instantly pulled. Where other users have to submit a few spam reports before the post is flagged to be removed.

The system rarely gets abused because they have to be members to report the spam, and the report identifies who submitted it. Anyone that abuses it, has the wrath of the admin to deal with. It rarely happens.

Reporting bad behavior is a different thing. That involves a fuzzy definition and gets lots of judgement call like reports. Spam is different though. It is pretty cut and dried what it spam and what is not.

Cut the spam and paste in a pm to Martin. He will take care of it and you don’t have to waste time complaining about it.

Spam reporting is in the works. Thanks for your tips, Eric & swirt – those are some great ideas I will use.

Neil, maybe I will end up with ignore feature instead of block one. We will see ;)
