Hi,
I am a very happy LJ use, and I think the site are so elegant, and well setup, it’s a perfect inviroment for contact with others, not like other places I have been. So thank you.

But the search function are not on the same level as the rest of the site.
I think it would be a idea, to update it when and if possible.
My suggestions for improvements:
Ebay could be a good image of a well made version.
First of all when searching on projects, or blog, it should show the first picture, so we esay and fast can reconize if we search for something specific.
Search by:
text, project, blog, date, popularity.

I hope it can be to some inspiration, and it’s only meant to be kind,
Best thoughts, to LJ,
Mads

That sounds like a reasonable request, Mads. Things can always be improved so hopefully Martin can take a look at that some day when he gets time. I can only imagine how much time this site takes to keep straight. I did have trouble finding something one day, however; like you, I’m pretty happy at LJ overall.

agreed mads.
it’s a very well designed website with a fantastic atmosphere :)
but the search function would benefit tremendously with some more selective filters as you say.

Search on this site is provided by Google. Unfortunately it can’t be modified that much. Fortunately the search results are pretty meaningful which is not always the case with built-in search options.

Search on a site this size is difficult by other means because a search index doubles or triples the size of the database. On a site like this with over 20,000 forum posts, 10,000 projects 20,000 blog posts, 2,000 reviews and 22,000 members …. not to mention a comment count that I would bet is in the ballpark of 1 Million. Google just has better methods of indexing all of this and dealing with the overhead so I can completely understand Martin’s choice of using an external search provider (google).

A while back he did offer a great tip of using google image search within the site
The search would look like this if typed into google image search site:lumberjocks.com kerfmaker

Swirt, perhaps that would be enough to solve the problem.

Kind of late to the party, but I do exactly as swirt says. I use the ‘site:’ keyword for searches all the time. Weird that it is a Google search also, but does a better job than using Google inside of Lumberjocks. Go figure. It also works for regular non image searches. Just enter the following into regular Google.

site:Lumberjocks.com mafe

Hi Steve,
You are so strange! Why should I make that search! I know what I posted! Ha ha ha LOL…
But I’ll try site:Lumberjocks.com SPalm instead – I’m sure it’s more interesting!
Thank you all for advice, perhaps some of this could pop up or down, when you press the search bottom – Martin!
Best thoughts, to all,
Mads

That’s a good idea Mafe. I think Martin mentioned he was toying with adding it as a direct search on here when he has a chance.
