I’am currently deciding wether to make a drafts board I have some veneer lieing around and want to use it up. I was going to glue the veneer onto an MDF backing Does anyone know if this would be a good idea

I like to veneer mdf since it is so stable. The fine furniture companies do this almost exclusively in their production to avoid movement of the table tops.

That’s how I did mine- Rotary cut maple over marine grade ply. All left overs.

An extra couple of coats of flooring poly helps prevent writing transfer. I did 3 coats of shellac for depth, and 5 very thin coats of poly.

May seem like over kill, but I really liked the grain in the maple, so I didn’t want my writing tools to ruin it.

I purchased my drawing board. It is made of particle board with a white laminate top. If you build one, be sure to make it at least 30” x 42”. This will enable you to use a scale of 3/16” per foot and larger. It’s awfully hard to draw in details when you have to use a smaller scale.

Definately build one. When you have a customer in the shop for a design meeting, there is nothing like have them pour over their drawings and sketches on a table you made. Just make sure to make it catch their eye. It really can be used to seal a deal on a sale. When they see you spent extra time on something you use every day they know you take pride in your work. First impressions are everything.
