Topic tags/keywords: plane square veritas laj low angle jack new

I bought a new Low Angle Jack plane and expect to use hit mostly for my shooting board.
I laid it on its side, and put my try square up to it, and there is an obvious gap, out of square.

I have not measured it yet, but this irks me a bit. This is not a cheap plane.

I own an AngleCube, so I should be able to measure it to within .2 degrees (at least according to spec)

what should be my expectations for how square the side of this plane is to the sole?

Thanks for any input on this.

ps. and yes, I know, I can adjust the side angle of the blade, but I believe that should be reserved for compensating for unsquare blade honing, not compensating for an tool manufactured out of square.

I would say dead square. Mine is and many others. Send a mail back to LV to change it.

It should be plenty square for a shooting board. Call Lee Valley, their CS is excellent. I had a tiny dent in a new router plane knob when it arrived. It didn’t affect the use, just bugged me because I expected a perfect knob after spending that kind of money. I called them up, wasn’t a jerk about it, just explained what the knob looked like and they were apologetic and sent me a new knob free of charge.

Great company, if you measure it out of square, tell them. They’ll replace it.

Thanks, guys. I’m going to measure it and then give Veritas a call.

I know they are great to work with. I bought a router plane from them and it came with 2 vshaped blades instead of v shaped and strait edge blades. Called them and told me to keep the extra and they sent me a new strait edge blade within a day.
