I have and old craftsman router that was my Dad’s and I have been looking at updating to a new one. I have not done too much router work, and will probably won’t be getting into any raised panel stuff or anything like that. I do like the idea of templates and maybe some of the joinery I see done with routers. The only other use would be in a table that I would like to build sometime.

Today I was at our local wood show and saw the Triton 2 1/4 hp routers in action. I kind of like these units. I have now read a couple of reviews on the net and I am thinking this machine just might be what I need. The local tool store has the Triton router kit for 199 loonies. ( I like to buy local if I can) This is a complete kit with lots of extras, even a 7 piece template guide kit.

So what I’d like to know from the Lumber Jocks here is any first hand knowledge any one might have with this tool.

Thank you all for your responses.

I’ve heard nothing but good about them.

I bought one a couple of months ago from woodcraft for$!99 and got $100 in additional router accessories in addition they gave me a 10% discount. I am totally happy with the router. Most of the woodworker magazines rated it one of the best. MIKE

I would be my first choice if I were buying a new mid range router.
Lots of features and great engineering. I have the 3-1/4 hp Triton and feel lit is the best of my current stable of machines.
That built in depth adjustment on the 2-1/4 is worth the money alone.

Thanks all for your reviews…..

I have pretty much made up my mind to pick one of these up, but I think it’s always a good idea to ask the Jocks about it first…. LOL .

How does this unit compare to the 3-1/4 model? I am in need of a router and the features on these seem identical. Just an extra horse on one. Is everything else about them the same?

I’m confused!

I wrote a review of this router , and you posted that you had one already, and that you were about to make a table for it.

I purchased this router a month ago, installed it under my router table. I am happy to see it is one of the best tool purchases I have ever made. It exceeded my expectations!

Charlie you are right ..You did a review just after I bought one and then built a table…...
The question I asked about the triton was before I bought it….. sometimes things here at the LJ comes back to you..even after a long while…. Don’t be confused…your not losing your mind…. check the dates on the postings…

By the way guys…..I have had no trouble with it to this point, and I just love this router. Be advised though that there has been some guys having trouble with the micro adjust….. check here

Guys… But what about the 3-1/4? Is it identical to the 2-1/4?

Spaids:

You are right, the 3 1/4 and the 2 1/4 are just about the same thing…just more H.P. In addition the 2 1/4 comes with a 7 piece template guide kit. Both Triton routers are very much at home in a table. If you are planing a lot of raised panel type work, then the 3 1/4 hp would be the one to look at.

One area you should use caution with this router – When you table mount this router under your table – make certain you orientate the hole in your plate for the lift away from your fence. Otherwise it becomes a very tight working space to raise your router. Orientate the lift hole in your plate to the outside left edge if you are righthanded.

Otherwise it is a great router.

I was told at the Woodworking show this past weekend ..one of the differences other than the power and cost of each the TRITON 2 1/4 HP vs TRITON 3 1/4 HP …is …...The 3 1/4 does not crank up from above Router table …so all raising of router to change bits must be from below on the 3 1/4 HP TRriton …

I was looking at the KREG router Table …and the Kreg guy….was using TRiton 2-1/4 HP ..

Spaids,

I don’t know about the 2 1/4 HP but the 3 1/4 HP is a GREAT table-mounted router. I can’t use it freehand, though; it’s too heavy. But . . . that’s what I have the Colt for.
