The IMDB message boards are going away effective Feb 20th. The only reason I mention it is because awhile back I predicted that message boards would die off because younger people prefer social media sites. While many websites consider themselves successful with tens of thousands of users, IMDB has users in the millions. So why are they closing? The software needs updating and they decided it was too expensive and there is no future in it because social media is taking over. When the internet was young I used to hang out at a place call The Wreck, which was rec.woodworking on Usenet. Nowadays few know that Usenet exists because as the internet matured, people moved to forums like this one and many service providers stopped providing access to Usenet. No doubt at some point in the future, Millennials will be lamenting the loss of Twitter and Facebook because with technology, nothing lasts forever. Anyway, I thought it was interesting in what it may portend for Lumberjocks that also badly needs a software overhaul and whether it will ever happen or maybe one day someone decides it’s not worth it and clicks off the lights.

How sad. I find social media, like facebook, to be garbage for purposes of sharing info.

It’s not that search friendly. Here, we can limit our wanderings to a certain forum, for example.

As to advertising, try to dig through a facebook site and you have to work a lot harder than, here, for example.

I’d rather review a PDF of catalog pages than dig around the average facebook page.

Have your say...
