Good Morning to all,

I posted this in case someone was looking for the ultimate piece of cherry. I saw my own lumber but I have NEVER came across a piece of cherry like this.
I was in my local woodcraft in Indiana last night picking up some sandpaper for my new Worksharp I was lucky enough to get and I saw a HUGE chunk of cherry in the corner sitting against the wall. The dimensions of this piece of cherry are: 3”X14.5X 14.5 feet long!!!! I looked it over and it is kiln dried with no signs of case hardening and there is no sapwood that I would see. It is still in the rough sawn state. This really is a VERY special piece of cherry and they told me they would cut pieces off of it if people wanted. That comment made me sick. This is NOT my piece of cherry, if it were, it would not be for sale. I believe they are asking $40 a lineal foot but I have a good relationship with them and I think I could get it cheaper. If anyone is interested in having it, let me know and I can help you to get it. I did the math and this one board is approx. 40bf in ONE piece of wood. Let me know if you would like my help to get this as this board is about one in a million.

That works out to be $11.00 a foot for cherry. Wow!!!!!!! I need to go into business reselling wood. There was a piece like this that was up for auction on Ebay last week (20-22” wide x9’x2.75” thick). The high bid was only $137.50. It didn’t meet the reserve but I am sure that the reserve was far less than $11.00 a bf.

These pieces are nice but I agree with rikkor that if I got it I am not sure what I would do with something this wide.

I asked one of my suppliers about a pallet of flame cherry recently and was quoted $14.75/ft.

A nice big piece of wood. I guess you could resaw it and have some bookmatched pieces.

But it would be easier if you got a whole flitch from a sawer.

That way all of the boards would be in sequence. You will never find that in a regular lumberyard.

Lee says that his friend Rick Hearnes at Hearnes hardwoods in Philadelphia. He tends to keep all of the wood he sells in flitch run and in some cases will only sell the whole log in sequence. He’s not interested in selling you one board.
