Topic tags/keywords: dust collection canister filters

Would it cause problems with the performance of my dust collection system if I routed the duct work through the outside wall instead of utilizing the canister filter?

No, I understand from that post that you are talking about having it go straight out the shop into the outdoors?... if so then the suction will be grater because you don’t have the resistance received from the filter. All the fine dust and debris will be pumped straight out and you will get the max CFM from your unit.

The only thing you might want to consider is the load on the motor..since it will move more air it may draw too many amps. Never hurts to check the amp draw to confirm. You can do it before you install your new vent…just rempve the filter and turn the machine on (with a gate open) and read the amps. Doubtful you will have a problem, but like I said: never hurts to check.

Fred is correct. You could overload the motor by reducing the resistance.
Check the amps. Especially check the amps on a cold day, that would be the worst case.

Fred’s got you covered on this. I’ll just add a little more info to what he said. It seems a little counter intuitive that removing a restriction to the airflow (such as a filter), would cause the motor to draw more power. But it is the nature of the blowers used. They are a form of centrifugal pump.

They actually unload when you completely restrict airflow. The motor will go faster, but if it isn’t moving air, it isn’t doing work. This is in contrast to a positive displacement pump, like something using a piston. Where air would be pushed through the pump.

So as you remove air restrictions, the pump can move more air and will do more work. More work means more power and amp draw from the motor. There’s a potential to exceed motor limits.

As Fred and others mentioned, check the amp draw. If it is too high, add some form of flow restriction anywhere in the system. This could be something useful like a cyclone or Thien baffle separator or just a partially closed gate or narrowing of an exhaust port.

More air is better for dust collection, so you probably want to run the motor at as high a power as possible, without exceeding limits. You just don’t want to overdo it. As with just about anything, even if you are within the limits, the harder you push it, the sooner it will wear out.

Thanks for the advice and info. I routed the 6” duct up 4 feet the used a 6×4 with about 10 inches of 4 inch duct through the wall. Works great, it is quieter and improves the flow.
