Topic tags/keywords: review general international portable planner

Hi all

I can’t find any review on this planner on the web(model 30-010 M1), as it looks to be fairly new to the market, does anyone have any experience with it. I am looking for a quality tool.

http://www.general.ca/pagemach/machines/30010a.html

I hesitate between this planner (600$) and the DW734 (400$)

thanks

Martin

Hi Martin.

I haven’t used either planer, but, from the photos of the General, that looks exactly like my Jet JWP-12-4P planer. Given that all the General International tools are made overseas it’s quite possible they are essentially the same tool. (Don’t mistake General International with the General line. The former is little different than Jet/Grizzly etc. where the latter is high-end equipment.) The Jet I have is serviceable, but I’d prefer the DeWalt.

Martin,

There are some differences between the two machines. A better match for the General planer would be the Dewalt 735 rather than the 734. But in reality you only give up 1/2” of planing width (12 1/2” vs 13”) and two speed (rough and finish) capability between the 734( single speed) and 735 (two speeds). I think that you will find the general consensus in this area is that either the Dewalt 735 or Delta 22-580 are the most commonly used machines as opposed to the General.

Wood Magazine did a review on several benchtop planers (the 22-580, Dewalt 734 and Dewalt 735 were included) and here were their conclusions:

Editor’s Choice Top Tool: DeWalt DW735
Editor’s Choice Top Values: Ridgid TP1300LS and the Ryobi AP1301

Hope this helps.
