Hello All,

I thought this would be a fun little post to see what folks might do if the government sends us checks to stimulate the economy. THIS IS BY NO MEANS A POLITICAL POST! I just thought it would be fun to see what tool is #1 on peoples wish list if we got a few extra dollars.

If I do get the check, I will be purchasing a LN#6 Fore Plane.

Who’s next?

I’ve got my eye on an oscillating spindle sander. Even though the guy at Sears told my daughter there was no such thing, I’m gonna buy one anyway.

I think I see a table saw in my future. been making do with a bench top unit that is great at cutting
various wedge shaped boards, but I’ve been holding out for a cabinet saw so this may be just the shove I need. Will also have to get some lumber for a coffee table the wife has wanted. I’ve told her that I couldn’t build it until I get a saw that can cut straight.

Assuming she doesn’t get to the mailbox first and waste the money paying off credit cards, a Ridgid OSS or Dewalt Planer – depends on how generous Bush is (with our money).

Jeff,

Just how much money are we talking about?

For our LJs from the North, this is all a plot. Noticed your Canadian $ has recently raised considerably in value compared to the lowly US $? This change of good fortune for our Northern Friends will force them to buy US made products because the Canadian $ can buy so much more of our goods. Between what the Canadians will be spending and what we will be with our checks (not sure how much), we will be on the road to economic recovery.

My Wife just read some stuff on the proposal. It is what Adrian has reported and if you have children, you get an additional $300 for a total of $1,500. She also said the report she was reading said the checks would go out in May.

$600 is a nice amount of money for tools and materials. $1,200 is even better if anyone know how to work that.

If I understand this thing, if you paid no income tax last year but you had 3,000 adjusted gross income you will only receive $300.00 for single and $600.00 for a couple, so what does that mean to people on S/S who were lucky enough not to have there Social Security Benefits taxable last year but had other income and because your S/S/B were not taxable you did not have pay any income tax. If I’m wrong about this will someone please explain it, if I’m right I wonder were the clearing house for advertise also known as AARP were on this. Well I guess my new band saw will have to wait a little longer.

I will likely pay off debt. If I do decide to spend the money on tools I will make darn sure I buy something made in the good ole USA. We’ve let too much of our industry leave the country as is. It might be pretty hard for me to find something made in the US. Are there any 8” jointers or drum sanders made in the US?

I will be waiting to see if it gets here first. If so, then probably a few tools. Since I just bought the DeWalt planer and Ridgid OSS, the list has gone down quite a bit.

I’d honestly be fighting a very strong urge to save it…but should it happen (and I’m guessing it will), it really should be spent.

That said I sure could use a new drill press and some american-made S&D pipe to complete my dust collection system! Woo-hoo!

Of course, I could always use another router, a horizontal router table, some new tablesaw blades, a couple hand planes…mmmm, hand planes.

How much money we talking about again? :)

Boy did you open up a can of wishes here. $300 bucks doesn’t go very far for tools, college tuition!!...wouldn’t buy a semesters worth of books, and have you seen the price of lumber lately? Don’t whack me for saying it but I don’t think I need any power tools right now. I would only need to get bigger ones and therein lies madness.

I am looking to upgrade my chisels. I am torn between the socket chisels from LN and the Ashley Iles bench chisels.

I guess I’ll have to make sure to spend bills from a pay check if I decide to buy the British ones.

Come to think of it, I have been lusting after a shoulder plane and the three I have lusted after most are made in Canada, The US and GB respectively.

So with the exchange rate the way it is, maybe buying Candian could have a trickle down effect because the money would end up in the US?

Not counting chickens . . .

I thought about buying some turning tools, or a new band saw, or maybe one of those Oneway lathe chucks. I couldn’t find anything made in the US. Isn’t that the idea? If I spend the money on a foreign made goods, my fellow Americans won’t be put to work. So I made a decision. I am going to take the money to Foxwoods Casino in CT. This will work. Native American tribes backed by Arab investors can use this cash. But wait! Gasoline is so expensive and I will most likely loose the cash anyway. I know, I’ll send some to John McCain so he can have his tooth fixed, or some for Hillary Clinton so she can buy a dress, and some for Rudy so he can get new false teeth. That’l work.

While it would help more if you bought American made, at least it would help the retailers and employees you bought from. They depend on sales for their livelyhood, and most of them are American owned. And if you by from a local owned company, more benefit returns to the community.

While I find the amount of the checks to be on the small side (double the checks would be more stimulus), I will probably spend it on a tool for the shop. I still have not narrowed it down yet. Most of the tools I would buy are more than the checks, so it would be more like a down payment rather than a purchase.

Tempting as that is (and it’s oh-so tempting), I’d rather use it to build me a shop a little bigger than 6’x6’. I like cozy, but that’s just ridiculous! ;)
