Topic tags/keywords: question cutting board

Does HD sell the Salad Bowl Finish needed for the cutting boards? I cant seem to find it on their website. Or do they sell another brand of finish? Also what is this 50/50 mixture ive seen people say they use on their boards?

Don’t get too tangled in the finish crap. Most finishes are food safe after they are CURED. Keep in mind that shellac is used as a pill (as in drugs) coating. It is an organic product. I would just use plain old mineral oil. Just don’t try to put the bowl in a dishwasher. You’ll have to re-oil from time to time.
Please don’t use polycrapithane on any fine wood products.

Greetings brantly,

+1 for Bill White on the mineral oil….That’s all I’ve ever used on my boards….that’s all you really need ..period…..3-4 good coatings till the m.o. is soaked in good, and maybe once a month put another

light coat on…..Don’t worry about a 50/50 mixture of anything…...just the oil will do, as Bill said…It’s all I use..

Another vote for mineral oil… from the laxative section of the pharmacy or super market.
That’s all I ever use. Cheap (like $3 per bottle) and really makes the wood pop!

Thanks everybody for the advice. I will try the straight mineral oil method and post the finish product on here for critiquing.

Well I have almost finished the boards. I went to home depot today to get the mineral oil. I couldn’t find it so I asked one of the guys working there and he pointed to the mineral spirits and he said “that’s it right there” and I said “that’s mineral spirits” and he said “its the same thing. I don’t even know why they put spirits on there but that’s what it is. Is mineral oil.” .... – I just nodded my head and left. Do the home depots or lowes carry mineral oil. I’m wondering if the home depot here just doesn’t carry it?

Greetings brantly,
Just go to your local grocery store or pharmacy and buy the mineral oil….they all carry it..about #2.00 a bottle. Mineral spirits and mineral oil is not the same thing…..where do they get these people to work there?
I believe that a big majority of the people working in the Lowes and Home Depot are brain-dead, cause they know nothing about nothing when it comes to the products they carry there..

You will find mineral oil in the pharmacy where the laxatives are. It is usually on the bottom self and should cost only a few dollars, as Rick said.
