Hellooooo,…Fellow LJ’s! I am (much like scrollgirl) waiting with much anticipation for the beginning of fall. With it brings the colors of the season, cooler weather which is greatly appreciated (especially here in Texas!) and most importantly,…my annual hunting/camping trip that I look forward to from the drive home till the day I can go again. When I get to go, I go for 9 days (maybe 10 this year). We start planning and counting down the days at about 200 days till. As of today, there is ONLY 60 days left! I always seem to get into a really good mood the closer it comes to that day. Although there is a lot of work and planning that goes into this trip, I enjoy EVERY minute of it. I guess you could say I am like a kid waiting on Christmas. It is all too apparent to everyone that knows me that I enjoy this annual excursion. It allows me to mentally reset all aspects of my life and build up a buffer to the “ka-ka” of the daily grind. I grow a beard, eat “unhealthy” food, scratch where it itches, curse, spit and drink as I see fit. If I want to get up and go hunting at 5 A.M., I do. If I want a Spam sandwich at 10 P.M., I eat one! I actually have a recliner that is dedicated to the deer camp outing. It is in storage all year except for that period of time. When I first brought it out there, the guys ragged me for it saying I was “a soft girly man”. By the time the cold night air and the tired feeling from the daily hunt hit them, they were asking if they could use it for a while. There is nothing like sitting around a crackling camp fire on a cool fall night in my recliner with a full belly and a cold beer, staring up at the night sky. I lay there counting my blessings and realize how lucky I am to have the life I live. *HOW COULD ANYBODY NOT LOOK FORWARD TO THAT?

The deer camp
It is a stress free mind rejuvenating reset of your entire well being. A years’ worth of stress is lifted as the dawn breaks across the horizon on opening day.
The fog of your breath engulfs your head as a squirrel rustles the leaves outside of your blind. Off in the distance you hear the echo of a hawk screech as a cold breeze lightly blows across your face. Your ears pick up the least little sound. Your eyes scan the horizon for any movement. This is a tradition that you welcome every year. A time honored event that is most anticipated by all generations. A since of satisfaction and reflection overwhelms your mind. You think of all the good things in your life while you are alone with your thoughts.

I completely understand and relate to this. I can’t wait either. I get to go on the 16th dove hunting in Del Rio for 3 days, and it can’t get here quick enough. So where is your camp? And we actually have 4 recliners out on the wrap around porch (not the same but close).

I haven’t hunted in years, but I was raised on those kinds of trips. Reading your post really conjured up all those feelings of anticipation, freedom, oneness with nature…. fantastic memories. Great stuff!

Gotta love it! I enjoy the same passion!
I turned in for vacation time in Nov.
This year I will be working for a whole 4 days in Nov. The rest of the time I will be Sleeping, Hunting, Sight-seeing, Star-gazing and making a little bit of saw dust too.

Will return to work the second week of Dec.

Counting down the days….

Sounds like great fun and relaxation! My mind and body needs that. I just took 2 weeks off from my State job and ended up working every day except one in order to fill a Maple kitchen order.

This post makes me think of the song, “Da Second Week of Deer Camp” by Da Yoopers.

I take my father with me we relax and weight on the deer to come to us.
I don’t have a lazy boy to take but I do have a couple of comfortable chairs.
