Topic tags/keywords: question

I need about 36 bf of Genuine Mahogany, 24 of it in 8/4. I’d get it from Woodworker’s Source, but the thickest they have in stock is 6/4 (i may contact them to see if they might have some 8/4 that’s not listed).

I generally buy all my wood locally, but we’re short on genuine Mahogany trees around here. So, I need a source that will ship small quantities like this.

Thanks.

My source of hardwood has mahogany up to 16/4 and they ship anywhere. If you checkout ll Johnson’s Workbench web site in Charlotte Michigan you may find what your looking for. It would only be a short 6 hour drive for you to personally check it out.

There are many mahoganies. The ones I am familiar with are Honduras and African. Luan, aka Philippine mahogany, is regarded by many as an inferior type, though I guess that depends on what you use it for. I have read a comment that it makes very good boat planking.

I have noticed with luan that it varies a lot in color (ranging from quite red to a grayish red), and density. The dark stuff seems for dense than the light colored.

From the Wood Database: “Honduran Mahogany goes by many names, yet perhaps its most accurate and telling name is Genuine Mahogany. Not to be confused with cheaper imitations, such as Philippine Mahogany, Swietenia macrophylla is what most consider to be the real and true species when referring to “Mahogany.””

I was using “genuine” because it seems that is now the preferred language for many suppliers.

Thanks. I sent them a note. I also inquired of Edensaw in WA, but my guess is that shipping would be a bear.

Thanks, Charles. I found them on the web, but they said they only shipped 100bf and larger. I’ll give them a try.

For those who might find this interesting:

1) Irion does have it in stock, but minimum order is 150 bf. Unless someone in Louisville needs 115 bf of mahogany, that won’t work for me. My lumber storage is pretty full.
2) Edensaw has it. I am awaiting their shipping charge.
3) Hood Distribution in Louisville has African Mahogany in 8/4 if it comes down to that.

Awaiting response from Johnson’s.

I didn’t see any good 8/4 pieces on their listing. I could have missed something.

Niagara lists it. 20bf min. https://www.niagaralumber.com/order/hardwood.php

Do you have any experience with Niagara Lumber? Their price is great.

I received my order from Niagara. I don’t know how they include shipping in the cost. That’s stunning to me.

I haven’t had a chance to look at the lumber closely yet, but it looks good so far.

sorry, hadn’t checked in to this thread. They are local to me so my experience includes being able to sort through the boards. Nice people. I hope it worked out for you.
