I’m in the process of re-finishing a butcher block table. The legs were in pretty bad shape so I want to replace them but I’d like the legs to match the rest of the table. The problem is I don’t know what species of wood the table is made out of. At first I thought it might be white oak but now I’m not so sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve put a piece of white oak on top for reference. And here’s the end grain:

My guess would be white ash. I recently made a small table from it and the end grain looked exactly like your picture. Its hard to see the face grain on the top because there are so many small pieces. But from what I do see it looks like a very wavy grain pattern, much like the white ash i worked with.

Could be hickory. You might try wood-database.com to see if they have some close ups of the grain that will help with ID.
