I have read dozens (hundreds) of comments, discussions, etc about Disston saws, including how to restore them. I don’t have any Disstons, but I do have three old E.C. Atkins saws. I have a backsaw that belonged to my wife’s grandfather along with the miter box that goes with it. In addition, I bought two Atkins hand saws from Craig’s list for 15 dollars, one backsaw, and one rip saw. I looked the saws up in the Atkins catalog from 1909, and found them all there. It is very difficult (impossible) to tell exactly when the saws were made, but I am pretty sure that two of them were produced in the late 1800’s or very early 1900’s. They are all in very good condition (one is missing the medallion), although i have spent much time removing rust and still need to remove paint off the handle of one. I intend to have them sharpened when I am done cleaning and removing all the rust.

I guess my question is, how do Atkins saws compare with Disston. I know these are excellent saws! I have used all of the saws, and they cut wonderfully.

I can’t offer a lot of detail, but I have some Atkins saws and they indeed are nice saws. I think Disston was so successful as a business and brand and ended up buying up almost everyone else that is why they get more attention. There are just more of them left.

Feel free to hop on over to the saws thread and ask there, more people might see your question.

Thanks for replying. How do I “hop over to the saws thread?”
