Bert, I had looked at Gabardi site and planes a while ago, and they are nice, but you can buy a Spiers (whose planes they copy) for much less money.

jusfine, how easily can you find a Spiers in good shape for a decent price?
Matt does not hide that he gets his inspiration from Spiers and other old and contemporary plane makers.
Chris Swartz says that the had been looking for year for good Spiers and that he could not find one.
Another important hing is t support someone who makes an exceptional tool.
Some day I shall buy one them, not because I have a use for it or because I have extra money or because I can fully appreciate the fine qualities of such a tool but just to support a friend who manufactures an exceptional object just like some people would support an artist just for the beauty of the gesture.
I addition buying a plane from Matt will bring you great joy and satisfaction when you use it and I believe that they work better than a Spiers works, because the technology and the quality of the material is better.
Certainly the blade (HOCK) is much better than any Spiers blade ever was and the same is true of the sole.

b2rtch, check this link. There are a number of them on Ebay right now.

I guess you have to be in the right place at the right time. Here is one they copied.

Would be good enough for me, and as Mafe had posted on one of his threads, it is older, original, and has the “patina” that I like.

I would buy it to use it. :)

All the best to your friend.
