I was going to attempt making my own toner using General Finishes Dye stain and General Finishes High-Performance TopCoat (as prescribed on the General Finishes web site).

Finishing products of every variety are all used every day, but each all have their unique strengths and drawbacks.

Are there any unique characteristics and/or drawbacks to using a toners (particularly one created in this manner) to tint, shade, or slightly darken an freshly stained piece (stained with GF WB)?

An interesting question. Are you asking if you can mix stains together or by adding dyes you could modify the resultant stained colour?
