How to dry?

I have an oppurtunity to get some Eastern red cedar cut to 15”dia by 20” long. Can I resaw these into rectangles for storage purposes and let them dry in the large rectangles. I want to make bandsaw boxes when dry.

I’m sure you can. My recommendation is to not allow them to dry too rapidly or you will very like have many pieces crack and split. If you can control the drying rate that will go a long way toward preventing that. I would also seal the end grain as the wood will dry fastest from there.

I recently sawed some figured logs into rectangles and coated with anchor seal. Every piece checked horribly. I think it has to do with opening the inner portion of the wood up too quickly, and giving it the ability to dry quickly from all sides rather than just the ends. All other logs I have collected get coated on the ends and the bard left in place. It will take longer to dry, but should only give you light checking of the end grain.

I wouldn’t resaw them yet. I would put anchor seal on the ends of the logs, let them dry for a while before cutting. When you open all of that grain every where cedar will crack bad.

Or you could read some expert advice here from Dr. Wengert is Professor Emeritus in Wood Processing, Department of Forestry, at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) on this very topic.
