Topic tags/keywords: shaper cutter rail stile sale source

For those of you using a shaper. do you have any source with affordable rail and stile shaper cutters (3/4 bore)?

Best price I’ve seen so far is the MLCS sets at $150 (rail and stile + raised panel set). Is there anything else of interest? any other options on the market that are at the ~$100 range (or lower)?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Sharon;

I don’t know if you’ll find anything lower than MLCS. I have a few of there sets, and they work nicely. I have to add though, I have other brands, which were much more money, but were worth every penny.

Some of these sets has seen some very heavy use, yet still cut like they did the day I got them. I even had a custom made set done by Foredom, to cut the panel thickness we used in our veneered doors. (I think that’s who made them for me). Freud makes good sets too.

My point being, sometimes, you get what you pay for.

Good luck in this hunt.

Thanks guys,

shopguryl – acutally MLSC reversible sets are $130, and the $150 sets are stacked. I tend to agree that I would also be hesitant to get anything cheaper, am more trying to get an idea if there are other brands that I don’t know of that might be of equivalent quality , or better etc.

Lee – I agree that mostly you get what you paid for (I personally didn’t pay, so I ain’t getting anything) , which is why I’m trying to get an idea of the market before making any purchases. I heard good things about MLSC for router bits, but am in new water when it comes to shapers and cutters. currently I don’t know if I can even afford the $150 set, but I would like to at least start getting familiar with my options when the time comes and I’ll actually need to get the cutters. I love frueds quality, but will probably not put the cutters in such heavy use as a production shop so something more affordable may (?) be a better choice if the quality is not straight out BAD. Do you have any specific sets from MLCS that you’ve had good experience with?

but point taken. I’ll keep an eye on sales, and do some more comparisons.
