Does anyone know if it’s even worth having the sides of this plane welded? Right now sometime way back someone did a pinned fix and its pretty solid.

The pinned fix is solid. So why have it welded exactly?

I have a #10 adjustable mouth rabbet plane with cracked side; there’s a pin repair with copper that is very solid so there’s no more repair planned. Now, if you’d like to use the #604 as a shooter and the side isn’t smooth, that’s one thing to consider. But otherwise, if it works as-is, it’s not worth welding IMHO.

Welding cast iron and keeping it straight is not easy. Leave it as is if it’s flat

I’d leave it. It’s not a “worth it” question I don’t think. Either way it’s a repaired #5.

If it’s value you’re looking to gain, just keep looking for a used base.

Not really look for Value. I love restoring then using them. My son’s now getting into woodworking so they’ll get passed on. Thanks for the opinions guys.

It is an earlier model.”rounded sides”
But as said above, it is now a repaired model.

Is that area that a different color lead filled by chance?
