Topic tags/keywords: question recommendation

In my home shop, I really need to keep air hoses and exension cords tidy. There are tons of retractable systems out there, but some can be really cruddy. I am hoping to get some recommendations for good ones. I prefer the really flexible lightweight airhose to the heavy rubber stuff.

I got my air hose retactable reel from Harbor Freight. Works great. On sale for 39.99 I have heard from many others that have the HB reel, and they too say it is worth it and works great.

Harbor Freight and Workshop Tools both have some inexpensive hose caddies.

I have a few 5 gallon buckets that I tote around with air hoses and extension cords. In the bottom side of the bucket I drilled a hole so the male connection end can be hooked to the compressor or an outlet. Granted they need rewound by hand but they are always where I need them and tidy.

I use them multiple outlet strips along the wall behind, or beneath the front edge of my bench top.

My air hose is wound up on a hand crank winder from Grizzly tools. As for the portable extension cords, they’re bundled with those elastic shock cord keeper thingys and hung on hooks. The non-portable ones are from Craftsman and have the autowinder mounted to the ceiling. If you buy one of those, try and find a 12 or 14 AWG one without the circuit breaker. Mine kept popping it’s internal breaker when I ran the shopvac and tablesaw together. I ended up cutting it off and replacing the plug end. No more problem. I have also found that the winders are built to close tolerances regarding the coil size. So when you rewind the thing, ya gotta “layer” the line neatly, otherwise it binds. I still use it the most though.

I have retractable air and electric in my small shop. It’s really handy to have them where you need them, but even more handy to just retract them out of the way when you don’t want them there. When I get into my new shop I’m going to add even more. Harbor Freight, Northern Tool & Equipment, and even Sears (on sale) sell different lengths and styles.
