Topic tags/keywords: 6 jet jointer jet jointer jj-6os jj 6os square jointer square set up

I recently purchased a 6” Jet open stand jointer model JJ-6OS. I tested the squareness of the fence to the table and it’s slightly off. When I loosen the lock-down lever (?) I can manually square the fence but as soon as I retighten the lock-down lever that keeps the fence from moving, it pulls the fence back out of being square. I googled manuals for the jointer but the pictures and descriptions don’t match my jointer even though the model number on my jointer matches the manuals I find online. Does anyone know anything about an alternate manual for the JJ-6OS, or is anyone able to help direct me on maintaining squareness of the fence as I lock it into place? Thanks so much in advance!

I have the cabinet version (6cx?).
I recall the fence tilt adjust stop being stubborn, there is enough slop in the jam-nut setup that you need to compensate in a trial and error approach.

Once the stop is set correctly, I hold the fence against the stop with the handle, then lock the tilt lever.

If you are not using the stop, cleaning the surfaces where the lock lever bites in will help (remove paint, burrs, etc.)

Also inspect the washer for flatness.

As an alignment aid, these HF magnetic welder’s square are cheap and useful.

I use a Wixey Angle Finder to sneak up to 90° on my jointer, also a Jet.

I have jet 10BTOS so i feel your pain.. that what I do. If you have two 90 squares, you can clamp them at either side of fence after loosing the lever. To the fence and with the bed using 4 clamps. Then tighten the lever.
