Topic tags/keywords: jointer

Hello fellow LJ’s,

I just ran across a lightly used powermatic 8” jointer on Craigslist for a price that may even be reasonable for my wife! Actually she is just sick of hearing me talk about looking for a jointer.

Here in lies my question. I’ve heard that powermatic had some issues with bowed or cupped jointer beds since moving production overseas. Does anyone have any suggestion on how exactly to evaluate the jointer beds. I’m presuming I just used the old straight edge and look for light under the edge? My only super, crazy straight edge is wood peck square about 12” long. Will this work or is a longer edge a must? for evaluating a bow.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Without knowing the machine (I imagine it’s between 3ft and 5ft long?), I’d suggest that your 12in straight isn’t going to be straight enough, unfortunately.

Do you have a spare of wood or ply that you could plane straight and true with a hand plane?

FWW has a smart little blurb detailing your question. Instead of light they suggest a set of feeler gauges.

One of the handiest “tools” in my shop is a Veritas 50” aluminum straight edge. It’s not nearly as pricey as something like a Starrett, and it is accurate to within .003” over the entire length. It will stand up by itself and you can evaluare a surface easily.

If you’re not a member of FWW here’s a copy & paste version of the article.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Actual Size”.
