I'm pulling my hair out…

I've got a Makita LS1013 compoud miter saw I'm borrowing. It has an old rusty blade. But I can't lift the blade guard/center cover to access the blade bolt. I looked at the instructions online, and they paint it as an easy thing, but while the cover/guard lift off a little, they get stuck and I can't do anything to get it loose.

Here's a video of what I'm dealing with:

Any help would be profoundly appreciated

I have that sam saw. When the unit is locked in the down position I cannot move the guard very far. When I unlock it and let the saw swing up then I can freely move the guard all the way back. But, something is wrong with your guard, it looks to be detached in some way.

Put the forward screw back in place….that screw is what the black plate pivot's on. Loosen the rear hex bolt (you don't even have to remove it) and the black plate will pivot DOWN (counter clockwise) on the forward screw 180 degrees.
