I’m getting ready to install Tamarack trim in our new house and trying to make a decision on the poly finish. Have used Minwax Polycrylic for years on cabinet and furniture pieces I’ve built, but have had trim carpenters recommending Sherwin Williams product as a better quality finish (i.e. more solids).

In my research one big difference so far is that Minwax recommends a triple coat on everything with sanding in between coats, while Sherwin Williams recommends only 2 coats (unless you are doing a hardwood floor).

Anyone have experience with the Sherwin Williams product? What did you think-was it worth the higher price?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Gerry

Well, Gerry, it’s not the same thing exactly, but my experience with Sherwin Williams products is that they are superior to what I buy at the big box stores. Here, I’m referring to latex paint. It took fewer coats and covered better than anything else I tried.

Does that quality extend to poly? I guess I’d suggest coating some sample pieces and see what your results are.

Please let us know what you find.

I have used several gallons of that finish, including using it on a floor, and I like it a lot. It is easy to spray and brush, and is very durable. I have a table that is by the front door of my house that is where keys and other items get tossed frequently, that has that S-W finish, and after five years it still isn’t scratched.

I’ve used a lot of that Sherwin Williams product and have been very pleased with it…. You might want to also look at General Finishes – Enduro Clear Poly or General Finishes – High Performance. I use a lot of both of the General Finishes and reply like how easy the spray and level out as well as their durability. Plus they can be applied by hand too.

The price per gallon on that is amazing.
