Having started to learn woodturning, on my quest for knowledge came across this youtube video on machining tools, a few are talked about but the first one was the lathe, very interesting to me.
I saw that episode on TV a while back, and it is indeed very cool. The lathe is arguably the oldest machine tool around and perhaps the most useful. I remember South Bend used to advertise it as being a machine that can make itself, referring to all the various parts it could fabricate with the appropriate setup. Not many other machines can make that claim.
i think the lathe is the first machine Gingery builds in his machine shop tool series, probably a reason for that…
