I just bought a used powermatic bandsaw 141. I'm doing some upgrading to it. The question I have is, it looks like the old tires are glued on and need replaced bad do I need to remove the old tires before installing new urethane tires or can they be installed on top of the old ones? Also is the carter upgade kit worth the money? Thanks in advance.
I have the newer version of the Powermatic with the Carrter bearings and quick release. The thumb screws on the Carter bearing set are so small you have to use pliers to tighten them. Also its a pot metal collar with crude threads so you got watch over tightening. Not a particularly high quality item, but it came with the saw and I'm glad to have the proper bearings. The Carter seems to be the only set with the thruster bearings set facing the right way. While I like the bearing set, I could not live without the Carter quick release. The quick release is well made and saves you endless headaches. If I was going to buy something I would buy a Carter quick release over the bearing set.
