My wife had a painted dresser she wants me to turn in to a dual sink vanity for her bathroom. What do I do to protect the top from water getting on it?

Several coats of clear poly. That’s what I used on the oak top when I made our bathroom vanity. Actually I brushed on about 8 coats which may be over kill :)
